Commercial Lock Rekeying in NYC and the Five Boroughs

City buildings rekey differently from suburban ones, and the difference is mostly about who holds the keys. A Westchester office is usually one tenant and one set of doors. A city storefront or walk-up is several interests on the same cylinder: a managing agent, a super, a delivery route, and whoever the previous tenant handed a copy to. Before we pin anything we want to know which doors are actually yours, because the lobby and the mail room often are not, and rekeying a cylinder the building owns goes through the managing agent rather than through you.

Commercial rekeys in the city usually land on one of these:

• Storefront and roll gate cylinders. A retail entrance is normally a mortise cylinder in a narrow aluminum stile, and the gate padlock or cylinder beside it sits on a separate key. Bringing both onto one key is as often the reason for the visit as the security is.
• Office suites in a shared building. Your suite door and the doors inside it are yours to rekey. The floor and lobby doors belong to the building, so those are the managing agent's to authorize.
• Co-op and condo buildings. Boards and managing agents usually want a restricted keyway and a written record of who was issued which key, which is a key control decision as much as a rekey.
• Multi-tenant walk-ups. Apartment cylinders and the mailbox bank tend to drift onto different keys after years of piecemeal replacement, and pulling them back onto one master is what most owners are actually asking for.
